The Wagener Family Scholarship
In Memory of Michael Wagener
The Wagener family has dedicated their lives to education, both professionally and personally. Thomas “Bodie” Wagener retired in 2015 from Humble ISD as an administrator with Career and Technology since 1978. Susan Wagener, Bodie’s wife, has worked as a counselor for over 30 years. As a shared counselor she worked closely with high schools and colleges assisting students with the transition to a career pathway. Their sons, Michael and Matthew Wagener, have benefited from Career and Technology programs in Humble. Their leadership skills were developed through their participation in CTE programs like Agriculture, FFA, and Health Science Technology.
After the death of their son, Michael, both Bodie and Susan believed education regarding underage drinking was an important part in changing the lives of young people. Both Bodie and Susan are certified instructors with the state of Texas for the Alcohol Education Program for Minors.
In 2010 they started CHOOSING TO CHANGE, an organization that reaches our youth and the adults responsible for them. Through CHOOSING TO CHANGE, Bodie and Susan teach classes to students and parents that address Alcohol Education, Decision Making and Truancy. In addition to the work they continue to do with CHOOSING TO CHANGE, they also have facilitated the GRIEFSHARE program since 2006.
The Wagener family believes in the motto ‘Learn by Doing’. Bodie and Susan believe that their sons have learned so much by this example driven motto.
In Michael’s short life, he impacted so many by whom he was as a person and by his character. The Wagener family’s hope is for us all to leave this world a better place because it is not by what we have, but by what we do and by the lives we touch.
In response to the Wagener’s life goal of furthering the education of students, a Career and Technology scholarship will be founded in the Wagener Family name in memory of Michael Wagener. The CHOOSING TO CHANGE organization will start with $1000 donation in hopes that others will participate to raise the $20,000 needed for a perpetual scholarship foundation.
