Humble ISD Robotics Team Scores Big at Tournament

Ike Coffman, Pre-Engineering Teacher at the CATE Center, won a Education Foundation grant a couple of years ago to build up the robotics program in Humble ISD. We recently received this note from Mr. Coffman:

Dear Humble ISD Education Foundation,

I am proud to be able to announce that one of our high school robotics teams won the tournament championship at the Houston VEX robotics contest this last Saturday. This was a big, fun, and exciting contest with 27 teams registered from all around the Houston area.

Winning team members are (from left to right): Nicholas Kiker, Erik (Frank) Gunnels, and Melvin Morrison, all from Atascocita High School.

One consequence of winning is that the team has been invited to participate in a couple of invitation only contests, including the CREATE Championship of the Americas in Omaha, Nebraska on March 18-20, 2010 () and the 2010 VEX Robotics Competition World Championship in Dallas, Texas onApril 22-24, 2010.

The VEX robotic supplies were originally purchased through a Humble ISD Education Foundation grant we won in 2008, and we thank the Humble ISD Education Foundation for their support. Without this grant, we would not have been able to participate in this contest, much less have a chance to compete and win.

If you have a chance, make sure you congratulate these students. They earned this victory through hard work, creativity, and luck. They earned it, and they are deserving champions!
